Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain said whatever happens next will not undo the incident, which took place at about 1.30am.
“Hence, I urge him to surrender immediately at the nearest police station,” he told reporters at the terminal.
Shuhaily also said the suspect has a criminal record for two cases involving criminal intimidation, and one for theft and impersonating a civil servant.
Earlier today, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that two gunshots were fired in the airport’s arrival hall.
He said a man had fired the shots at his wife but failed to hit her.
One of the shots hit a bodyguard, who suffered severe injuries, before the suspect fled the scene.
A manhunt has been launched for the suspect.
Shuhaily said the suspect and his wife were believed to be business partners in a travel agency.
Reports said the couple was in the process of getting a divorce, with the wife believed to be in the early stages of pregnancy.
“The intended victim (the wife) had previously lodged a police report that the suspect had threatened her and he was eventually arrested by the police,” he said.
He also said the suspect does not possess a gun licence: “We believe he obtained the gun illegally.”
Following the shooting incident, Shuhaily said, security measures at the airport will be reviewed.
On the injured bodyguard, Shuhaily said the victim is currently in critical condition at a hospital and has been put into an induced coma.
