GEORGE TOWN:
Malaysia has provided aid to Gaza three to four times, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“Two weeks ago, Egypt helped expedite the process,” he told reporters here today, adding that he had personally requested assistance from Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for the provision of aid on two occasions.

Anwar confirmed that funds are still available in the government’s allocation for Gaza.

“Insya-Allah, we will help. It’s important to clear the lengthy queue of aid trucks first to ensure a more organised distribution process,” he said.

In February, Anwar announced Malaysia’s decision to boost financial assistance to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), in response to the withdrawal of funding by several prominent nations.

Apart from the regular annual aid, Malaysia allocated an extra US$2.1 million (RM10 million) to UNRWA, along with contributions of US$250,000 to the Egyptian Red Crescent Society and US$500,000 to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
