KUALA LUMPUR:
A family outing to a river in Seri Kembangan near here ended in tragedy when one of the children drowned, while the mother and her young daughter are missing after a water surge hit them.

Selangor fire and rescue official Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said a 40-year-old man had reported that his wife, aged 38, and their children, two boys aged nine and 10, as well as their four-year-old daughter had been swept away by strong currents.

A rescue team located the body of the 10-year-old boy at 7.01pm about 1km from where they were last seen.

He said members of the public managed to rescue the nine-year-old boy at 5.18pm, while efforts are under way to locate the mother and daughter.

He said initial investigations revealed that the victims were catching fish in the area when they were hit by the water surge.
