
According to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), the reserves at the West Sembrong dam in Johor was at 31.65% as of yesterday, Air Itam dam in Penang was at 35%, and BS Padang Saga dam and Malut dam in Kedah at 39.67% and 39.9%, respectively.
Quoting the National Water Services Commission and the irrigation and drainage department (DID), Nadma said the water storage reserve at the Muda dam in Kedah was at the warning level of 41%.
The water storage reserves of three more dams are at alert levels. They are the Timah Tasoh dam in Perlis (56.25%), Bekok dam in Johor (68.58%) and Teluk Bahang dam in Penang (69%), it said.
DID said it issued a drought forecast for three river basins – Sungai Muda, Sungai Kelantan and Sungai Melaka – on March 25.
Nadma also said the situation may cause water supply disruption problems in Sik, Kedah; Pasir Mas, Machang, Tanah Merah and Kota Bharu in Kelantan; and Alor Gajah in Melaka.
It said a level 2 hot weather warning, or a heatwave, was recorded in Perlis from March 25 to 27; in Hulu Perak, Perak, from March 26 to 27; Kota Setar and Pokok Sena in Kedah on March 27; and Beaufort in Sabah on March 25.
The meteorological department previously said the transitional monsoon phase is expected to begin tomorrow and continue till May, marking the end of the northeast monsoon.
With the beginning of the monsoon transition phase, the prevailing hot and dry weather conditions in most places across the country are expected to gradually recover by mid-April.
