Deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister Fuziah Salleh said her ministry was collaborating with NGOs to advise Ramadan bazaar traders to collect unsold food to be distributed to those in need as part of its MySaveFood programme.
On March 20, Fuziah said that around 8.1 tonnes of food and beverages worth about RM116,000 were salvaged from Ramadan bazaars nationwide during the first six days of this year’s fasting month.
“Besides collecting surplus edible food, we also make compost from food waste using the compost machine provided by SWCorp, which can produce fertilisers within 48 hours using enzyme materials,” she said in a Bernama report.
She was speaking to reporters after the Pahang-level MySaveFood 2024 Programme at the Rahmah Mahkota Square Ramadan bazaar in Kuantan.
Fuziah said 25 tonnes of unsold food was collected during the pilot MySaveFood project during Ramadan last year.
