The name change was made at a Cabinet meeting yesterday following a proposal by minister Fadillah Yusof.
The ministry, in a statement, said the change in name was to better reflect its role and responsibilities in the country’s energy and water transformation efforts.
“The purpose of the name change is to ensure that the government’s aspirations through the functions and tasks of this ministry are better understood by the public,” it said.
The ministry also affirmed that it would continue to oversee the energy and water sectors, both of which are crucial components of people’s lives and welfare.
Fadillah’s ministry was created on Dec 12 last year following a Cabinet reshuffle.
It is a breakaway from Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad’s natural resources, environment and climate change ministry.
