Fahmi, the communications minister and government spokesman, said the party has not discussed the matter.
“We will have to wait. We haven’t held a meeting, so the matter (of disciplinary action) has not arisen,” he said after attending a youth empowerment forum at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
On Jan 31, Hassan had suggested that Umno revamp its leadership with fresh leaders with integrity and charisma to help the party regain the support of the Malays, a key factor in Barisan Nasional’s dismal performance in recent elections.
He also said Umno, currently led by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, should not continue to ride on Pakatan Harapan’s “fragile” coat-tails in the upcoming general election (GE16).
Yesterday, Hassan was quoted as saying he was ready to face any disciplinary action, including being sacked, if the party deems it necessary because of his outspoken nature.
He was responding to Fahmi’s earlier advice for PKR leaders to refrain from making comments deemed offensive against component parties of the unity government.
Today, Fahmi said Hassan should be ready to accept criticism, especially after he had “reprimanded” others.
Fahmi also said he had conveyed his views to Hassan, which were “well received” by the PKR veteran.
“In PKR, we are accustomed to giving and receiving criticism. However, some matters fall under party discipline. If Hassan can criticise, then he can also be criticised. And he said, ‘Say it, Fahmi, say it’, as he has no problem with being criticised.
“So, what I conveyed (to him) was a reminder, and it applies to every other party member. We leave it to the party to make any decision,” he said.
