In a statement, Zulkafperi said he was backing Anwar for the sake of his constituents.
“I would like to also support the policies and initiatives of the Madani government, which focus on the welfare, economy and development of the people, until the next general election,” he said.
The other Bersatu MPs who have announced their support for Anwar are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli).
Zulkafperi also said it was his decision to back the unity government and he was never pressured by anyone to do so.
The MP stressed that he is still with Bersatu and would never betray the party.
“However, to ensure that Tanjong Karang is on the same page with the federal administration, it is right for me to be with Putrajaya led by Anwar.
“This decision was made so that the constituency will be taken care of, and (the people) will get various benefits such as upgrades in infrastructure,” he added.
Zulkafperi’s reasoning behind his declaration of support for the unity government echoes that of five of his party colleagues who had earlier declared their support for Anwar. They too cited their constituencies’ needs and support for the federal government’s policies.
