PN lacks numbers for no-confidence motion, says PM

Anwar Ibrahim says the opposition is just playing up ‘propaganda’ to deceive their own supporters so they don’t get discouraged.

Despite multiple claims of the government’s impending collapse in the past year, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said PN has yet to file a no-confidence motion against him.
PETALING JAYA:
The opposition lacks the numbers for a motion of no confidence to be successful in the Dewan Rakyat, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

According to Bernama, Anwar claimed Perikatan Nasional was merely playing up “propaganda” to deceive their own supporters into thinking the unity government could be toppled.

Despite the multiple claims of the government’s impending collapse in the past year, Anwar pointed out that PN has yet to file a no-confidence motion against him.

“For days, we’ve been waiting, (but there’s) nothing.

“I don’t think they have the strength to bring this (motion of no confidence), it’s just propaganda to deceive their supporters so they don’t lose heart,” the PKR president was quoted as saying on the sidelines of an event at Iskandar Puteri in Johor today.

Yesterday, PKR’s Hassan Karim challenged the opposition to file a no-confidence motion if it wished to test Anwar’s validity as the prime minister.

This came amid speculation on the “Dubai Move” and Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor’s assertion that the opposition had enough statutory declarations (SDs) to take over Putrajaya.

The “Dubai Move” refers to alleged talks in the United Arab Emirates between certain opposition leaders and government representatives to topple Anwar’s administration.

Bersatu’s Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan rejected Hassan’s call, claiming the proposal indicated dissatisfaction among PKR representatives with Anwar’s leadership for failing to deliver on long-promised reform pledges.

Anwar said a no-confidence motion would be the right move for the opposition, taking a jab at PN’s claim of having SDs even from government MPs.

“If not, they would have to be spending every day looking for (SDs), or a ‘Dubai Move’.

“My advice to the Cabinet and government leaders in general is to focus on building the nation. In 2024, our focus is strengthening and developing the nation’s economy.”

More prominent figures to be nabbed? That’s up to MACC

Asked if the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will arrest more prominent figures soon for alleged corruption, Anwar said that was up to the anti-graft agency.

He reiterated that suspects under investigation need not worry if they did not commit any wrongdoing.

“They will only be prosecuted if there is solid evidence,” he said.
