PETALING JAYA:
Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor’s claims that the government will collapse soon is part of Perikatan Nasional’s strategy to prevent more of its MPs from supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, says Pakatan Harapan Kedah chief Mahfuz Omar.

Yesterday, Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul, one of the five Bersatu MPs who announced their support for Anwar last year, insisted that up to eight opposition MPs will announce their support for the PH chairman soon.

He claimed that these opposition MPs are waiting for the Dewan Rakyat to resume its meeting next month before declaring that they will back Anwar.

In an Utusan Malaysia report, Mahfuz said Sanusi’s claims indicate concern among PN’s leadership about such declarations of support for Anwar and their anxiety about several court cases.

He also said Sanusi’s allegations are damaging investor confidence as they might feel the country lacks political stability.

“However, the situation is quite stable with the prime minister having two-thirds majority support in the Dewan Rakyat,” said Mahfuz.

“PN leaders, especially Sanusi, need to be wiser…”

On Wednesday, Sanusi said he did not believe the government would last a full term, and that he expected a new government to be in place by the end of the year.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a state executive council meeting at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar, he said it was “normal” in a democracy for opposition MPs to back the government and vice-versa, and that it was also allowed under the Federal Constitution.

He gave, as an example, the pledge of support by the five Bersatu MPs for Anwar’s administration to ensure continued development in their constituencies.

His remarks were in response to speculation over what has come to be known as the “Dubai Move”, in reference to alleged discussions that took place between opposition leaders and certain government representatives in the United Arab Emirates recently.

The alleged meeting was supposedly aimed at dividing tasks among “agents” to identify MPs who could switch support to the opposition to form a new government, which has been played down by Anwar and other top government leaders.
