A former Amanah leader, Mazlan left the party to focus on activism as the adviser of Persatuan Anak Peneroka Felda Kebangsaan (Anak), an association that represents the second and third generations of Felda settlers.
Mazlan marked his return to active politics by contesting for a seat in the central committee at the party’s national convention this weekend but failed to win a seat.
“I didn’t have high hopes of winning,” the former Amanah central committee member told FMT.
“I have been involved in an NGO for three years, so my political activities have been minimal. I expected these results.”
A total of 1,003 delegates cast their votes at the party’s national convention this weekend to select Amanah’s new 27-member central committee. A total of 98 candidates contested for the 27 positions.
The various posts, including that of president, were then selected based on a separate vote involving just the 27 central committee members. They unanimously chose to retain Mohamad Sabu as the party president for a final three-year term.
Former religious affairs minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa was appointed deputy president and health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad was promoted as a new vice-president, alongside former Selangor executive councillor Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud and deputy defence minister Adly Zahari.
Despite the election setback, Mazlan said he remained steadfast in actively engaging in politics.
“Being active in political issues affecting Felda and rural areas remains my commitment,” he said.
“I will use whatever channels are available. That’s not a problem for me.”
