Speed is of essence in defending govt, building trust, says PKR delegate

PUTRAJAYA:
A Perak PKR delegate has urged the unity government to respond “quickly and consistently” to criticism of “unpopular decisions” for effective damage control.

Debating PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s policy speech at the party’s congress here today, Wong Chai Yi said the unity government’s response to issues has been rather weak.

“When the unity government makes unpopular, controversial or divisive decisions, it still acts slowly in terms of damage control.

“We need to understand that in today’s politics, perception is everything,” she said at the congress at Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

Wong did not specify what issues she was referring to.

She said the prime minister and ministers must provide explanations in a prompt, unified and consistent manner.

“When explanations are not swift and consistent enough, party members will be confused (as to how to respond) when engaging with the people,” she said.

Wong said the age of social media requires that the government race against time to ensure accurate information is conveyed to the people before the opposition starts picking at the issues.

“All this is to build trust and maintain the stability of the unity government,” she said.
