“If we receive any complaint, we will look into it and appropriate action may be taken,” its minister, V Sivakumar, told reporters after an event here today.

“Currently, there is no information from the labour department on this.”

Sivakumar was asked if the government or his ministry would take action against the restaurant owner over the incident which had gone viral.

In the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran warned that the incident could escalate into more significant religious and racial tensions without appropriate intervention.

On Nov 20, a Chinese Muslim restaurant in Kuala Lumpur faced backlash on social media for terminating an employee who had been shown wearing a cross, in a video that went viral.

Following this, the restaurant had received brickbats online for the sacking, which many claimed was discriminatory.
