State PAS chief named opposition leader in Penang

Perikatan Nasional has 11 seats in the state legislative assembly, comprising seven from PAS and four from Bersatu.

Fauzi Yusoff is the Sungai Dua assemblyman. He won the seat by more than 5,000 votes against the candidate from Barisan Nasional, in the state elections last August.
GEORGE TOWN:
Penang PAS chief Fauzi Yusoff has been named the opposition leader in the 40-seat state assembly, according to a handout released today.

Perikatan Nasional won 11 seats in the state elections last August, with PAS taking seven and Bersatu four.

Barisan Nasional (BN) won two seats, both by candidates from Umno.

However, in line with its alliance with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the unity government at the federal level, BN is now part of the PH-led Penang government for the first time since 2008.

Fauzi, a first-term Sungai Dua assemblyman, has been the state PAS chief since 2015. He beat BN’s Shaik Hussein Mydin by more than 5,000 votes.

The new state assembly will be inaugurated by governor Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak tomorrow, with the 2024 Penang budget to be tabled on Nov 24.
