Mavcom setting KPIs to track airline punctuality, says Loke

The aviation industry regulator will have the KPIs ready by next year.

The Malaysian Aviation Commission is looking into setting the percentage for flight cancellations in the country.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) is in the process of setting key performance indicators or KPIs for local airlines to track their punctuality, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

The aviation industry regulator is also looking into setting the percentage for flight cancellations in the country, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said.

“Mavcom is expected to have the KPIs ready by the first quarter of 2024,” he said during Minister’s Question Time.

Loke also revealed that Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia ranked the lowest in terms of on-time performance for domestic flights in the third quarter of 2023.

Airline on-time performance is defined as an aircraft arrival at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time. It is measured by on-time departing flights.

SKS Airways recorded the highest on-time performance for domestic flights at 95% followed by MASwings (93%), Batik Air Malaysia (82%) and FireFly (77%).

Loke added that the ministry, via Mavcom, would take action if airline companies failed to fulfil requirements in the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016 that stipulate the levels and minimum standards of service by aviation service providers.

He said the ministry would look at setting a target for the on-time performance to be achieved by airlines.

Failure to achieve the target would likely result in action by the ministry, he said.

“Certainly, we will always monitor (the airlines’ on-time performance), and we will also request these (local) airline companies to manage their schedules more efficiently,” he said.
