PETALING JAYA:
Jeli MP Zahari Kechik has denied being threatened or bribed into supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

Zahari, who is among four Bersatu MPs who stated their support for Anwar in recent weeks, also said there were no brokers involved in getting him to back the unity government.

He maintained that his decision was made in the interests of his constituents, Berita Harian reported.

“Ever since I came out in support of the prime minister, there have been many accusations linking me to threats or bribes, as though my decision was for my own interests.

“I only did so to serve the people of Jeli to the best of my abilities. I don’t want the people here to suffer just because I didn’t get any allocations. I have prioritised the people over everything else.

“And I’m willing to bear the criticism (for supporting the government) as long as my voters’ (welfare) are taken care of,” he was quoted as saying.

Zahari also warned of legal action against those who continued to repeat such claims against him, saying his lawyers had been going through the accusations made on social media.

He added that he was ready to face disciplinary action from Bersatu, although he had yet to receive any sort of letter from the disciplinary board.

Aside from Zahari, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid and Gua Musang MP Azizi Abu Naim had also stated their support for Anwar.

All four said the move was for the sake of their constituents, with Suhaili saying he received a constituency allocation of development funds following his declaration of support for Anwar.

Suhaili and Iskandar Dzulkarnain have since been suspended by the party for six and four years, respectively.

Meanwhile, Zahari confirmed receiving RM300,000 from the federal government after expressing support for the prime minister.

He said the funds were credited to the bank account under the Jeli parliamentary service centre yesterday.

“This allocation will be used for community programmes, assistance for chronic patients, food distribution and flood preparations.”
