PETALING JAYA:
R Yuneswaran will remain as the Segamat MP after Barisan Nasional candidate M Ramasamy withdrew his election petition to challenge the PKR man’s victory at the 15th general election (GE15).

Lawyer Adi Zulkarnain Zulkafli, appearing for Yuneswaran, told FMT that the petition was withdrawn during a case management before election judge Rohani Ismail today.

The lawyer said the reason cited for Ramasamy’s withdrawal was that BN and Pakatan Harapan are coalition partners in the unity government.

The court also made no order as to costs.

Also appearing for Yuneswaran were lawyers Lau Yi Leong and G Manivannan, while Ramasamy was represented by Shafee Abdullah.

Senior federal counsel Nur Irmawatie Daud appeared for the Election Commission (EC), a co-respondent in the case.

Yuneswaran won with a majority of 5,669 votes at GE15 last November. He defeated Ramasamy, Perikatan Nasional’s P Poobalan, and Pejuang’s Syed Hairoul Faizey.

In his petition, Ramasamy claimed Yuneswaran and his agents had violated election rules regarding campaign materials.

The MIC man also alleged that Yuneswaran distributed food parcels to voters on the campaign trail.
