KUALA LUMPUR:
Irked by labels such as “kafir” used by some opposition MPs, Sarawak’s Willie Mongin has reminded them that he is the “infidel” who helped Perikatan Nasional seize Putrajaya in 2020.

The Puncak Borneo MP said he regretted that some elected representatives had resorted to such name-calling, including labelling others as “traitors”, in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Remember it was this ‘kafir’ who helped some of you here become ministers,” he said, pointing to himself, when debating the 2024 budget at the committee stage.

“As a Malaysian, I get offended when such terms are used.”

Willie was one of 11 PKR MPs who left the party following the Sheraton Move in February 2020. The move led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government and the subsequent formation of the PN administration, which comprised representatives from PAS and Bersatu.

Last year, Willie joined Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).

On Oct 17, Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) sparked a heated argument in the Dewan Rakyat when he labelled DAP “kafir”.

Willie went on to say that political parties should not come up with statements that could incite the public, saying it would only ruin the country.
