Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the opposition will support Anwar in defending the country’s sovereignty. He also urged the government to reveal more information on the threats that Anwar had received.
“I hope the government can share information (on the threats) with the opposition, especially if we are needed to play the role of ‘bad cop’ in (international) diplomacy.
“We understand that there are times when the government cannot speak too harshly. Perhaps the opposition can do so because we have more latitude in criticising our trade partners (Western countries) as the consequences are not as grave to us compared with criticism from the executive,” he said at a press conference in the Parliament lobby.
Yesterday, Anwar revealed that the “threats” he received over his criticism of the Israeli government following the war in Gaza were in the form of “statements” by European MPs.
When asked for more information, he said the government would release a media statement about the matter.
Wan Fayhsal, who is Bersatu Youth chief, also called for Wisma Putra to voice the government’s strong objection to Western countries supporting Israel by sending a stern letter to the US embassy.
He said “political pressure” was needed to stop Israel’s actions in Gaza, hence the need for the government to push the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to present a motion accusing Israel of war crimes.
“It’s important to exert political pressure. Just using humanitarian grounds is not enough because the US will allow Israel to do whatever it wants at this point.
“In the US Congress, very few are opposing resolutions in support of Israel due to the strong influence of Israeli lobbying, so it’s up to us here on this side of the world and other European countries, which are trying to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis,” he added.
