RTM launches ‘Biar Betul!’ segment to combat fake news and slander

The special segment will be aired daily after the Kanta 744 news slot on TV1 and the Berita RTM channel.

Fake news and slander have become rampant in recent times.
PETALING JAYA:
Starting Oct 1, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is set to launch a special segment titled “Biar Betul!” to combat the spread of fake news and slander.

The communications and digital ministry said the segment is a collaborative effort with Sebenarnya.my and MyCheck.my, both of which are overseen by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bernama, respectively.

“The ‘Biar Betul!’ segment will air daily after the Kanta 744 news slot on TV1 and the Berita RTM channel. It will be re-broadcasted across all social media platforms, including Radio RTM,” it said in a statement.

Earlier today, communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government had no plans to reinstate the Anti-Fake News Act as a means to combat the propagation of fake news and slander.

The Anti-Fake News Act was repealed on Aug 16, 2018, approximately four months after it was enacted during the Barisan Nasional administration.
