Selangor polls outcome a ‘final warning’ to Umno, says Tengku Zafrul

The Umno Supreme Council member says Selangor Umno leaders must accept the reality the party struggled in areas with more Malay voters.

Tengku Zafrul Aziz said Selangor Umno leaders must realise now that they are being rejected by the people.
PETALING JAYA:
The outcome of the state election in Selangor must be considered a “final warning” to Umno that it is losing the support of the Malay community, says Tengku Zafrul Aziz.

The Umno Supreme Council member said the success of the cooperation between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan in forming the Selangor government should not distract from BN’s poor showing at the polls.

“Of the 12 seats contested by BN, we only won two. This includes one DAP seat (that the party made way for BN),” he said in a Facebook post.

PH won 32 seats in Saturday’s state election, with Perikatan Nasional bagging the remaining 22.

Tengku Zafrul said that aside from the Sungai Air Tawar seat won by BN’s Rizam Ismail, the voting trend in Selangor revealed that Umno struggled in areas with more Malay voters.

“This reality must be accepted, especially by Selangor Umno leaders.

“If the result of this election does not serve as a final warning on the future of the party, then I don’t know what other warning is needed before we realise that we have been rejected,” he said.

He said Selangor Umno’s direction and ideology must be made clear and accepted by its grassroots.

“On that note, I hope the party’s leadership will step up and fix the situation instead of merely chasing power for the short term,” the Selangor BN treasurer said.

“They must work hard to regain the confidence of the grassroots and the people as a whole.

“Everyone in Umno, myself included, must reflect and rebuild our party’s strengths so that we don’t have to rely on any other party.”
