PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan is off to a strong early start in the coalition’s bid to retain power in Penang, with unofficial tallies showing victories in 14 of the 40 state assembly seats so far.

Komtar, Pengkalan Kota, Batu Lancang and Bagan Jermal were the first to go to PH, with Sin Chew Daily also reporting that Tanjong Bunga had been won. Padang Lalang soon followed, as did wins in Paya Terubong, Berapit, Perai and Jawi.

Longtime DAP leader Lim Guan Eng was believed to have secured re-election to a third term in Air Putih, with a lead of over 5,100 votes at last count. Elsewhere, PH candidates in Bagan Dalam, Sungai Pinang and Seri Delima also hold strong leads.

In the now-dissolved state assembly, PH held 33 seats through DAP (19), PKR (12) and Amanah (2), while its unity coalition allies Barisan Nasional held two seats through Umno. The opposition comprised Perikatan Nasional, through the sole member from PAS.

Results will continue to trickle in throughout the night, with official tallies expected in a matter of hours.
