Apologise for claims on river project, Vincent Tan, Berjaya Land tell Sanusi

Berjaya Land says it has served the caretaker Kedah menteri besar a letter of demand, asking him to pay a compensation of RM200 million.

Berjaya Group founder Vincent Tan and Berjaya Land Bhd want caretaker Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor to apologise for making allegedly defamatory remarks about the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project.
PETALING JAYA:
Berjaya Group founder Vincent Tan and Berjaya Land Bhd have demanded that Sanusi Nor apologise for making allegedly defamatory remarks on the RM700 million river-widening project known as the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG).

In a statement, Berjaya Land said it had sent the caretaker Kedah menteri besar a letter of demand last Saturday, asking him to pay a compensation of RM200 million.

Berjaya Land said Sanusi had, in a Perikatan Nasional event on Aug 2 in Kedah, delivered a speech that was “politically motivated, slanderous, plainly false, untrue, unwarranted, unsubstantiated, malicious and mischievous” against the firm and Tan.

They also asked the PAS leader to remove and retract all defamatory statements in his speech referring to Tan and Berjaya Land and to provide an undertaking that he would not repeat such remarks.

“In the event that Sanusi fails to comply with the foregoing demands by close of business on Aug 8, legal action will be taken,” said Berjaya Land.

The firm also said that several police reports had been filed against Sanusi as well as bloggers Murray Hunter, Badrul Hisham Shaharin (better known as Chegubard) and Raja Petra Kamarudin for similar defamatory and untrue remarks relating to SMG.

“These defamatory statements have tarnished my, and Berjaya Land’s, integrity, credit, reputation and image.

“We want to send a strong message that anyone making false and damaging statements about us will not be tolerated and we shall hold them accountable for their actions,” said Tan.

Last Friday, Berjaya Land said it would lodge a police report following Sanusi’s “baseless and unsubstantiated” claims about the SMG, a project that involves the widening and deepening of the Klang river from Mid Valley City in Kuala Lumpur to Port Klang.

Berjaya Land said that Sanusi had falsely claimed that Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) had sold 55% of its fully owned subsidiary’s shares to Berjaya Land and/or its related companies in relation to SMG.

Berjaya Land also said that Sanusi alleged Berjaya Land and/or its related companies were given 600 acres (240ha) of Selangor state land valued at RM10 billion for free, and that the state would lose around RM180 million as a result.

Previously, caretaker Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari also said he would take legal action against Sanusi for claiming that he (Amirudin) was involved in a “river project scandal” with Tan.
