Penang PN chairman Dominic Lau said that should the coalition wrest the state from Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional, it will make it mandatory for developers building houses in the state to allocate 30% low-medium-cost (LMC) units for Penang folk.
Currently, the Penang state government maintains that the developers must fulfil 30% of LMC housing quota requirements in their projects.
However, it provides an option for developers who could not build LMC homes to pay RM120,000 for every unit they could not build.
Lau also said that the PN-led government will build affordable houses that are priced below RM100,000, and took the caretaker state government to task for failing to provide affordable homes for locals.
“Youths here cannot afford houses that are built in Penang.
“Only foreigners can afford to buy these houses,’’ he said in his speech while launching the manifesto at Hotel Seri Malaysia, here.
Apart from affordable housing, other promises made by the opposition coalition in its manifesto are:
- RM1.5 million subsidy in industrial training programmes for state-owned subsidiaries and private companies.
- RM5 million in incentives for fishermen.
- Waiving licence fees for small hawkers in the state.
- RM14 million funding for religious schools, mission schools and vernacular schools.
- RM1,200 cash aid for those who are in their first year of university and teachers’ training colleges (IPG), and RM500 cash aid for matriculation and Form Six students.
- Introducing Autonomous Rail Rapid Transport (ART) to help ease traffic congestion in Penang and reviewing the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) so that it “fulfils the needs of the people and is done in a fixed timeframe”.
PN is contesting all 40 seats in Penang, with Gerakan contesting 19 seats, followed by PAS (10) and Bersatu (11).
