GEORGE TOWN:
A man detained during a drug raid last night died in the police lockup in Nibong Tebal this morning.

Penang police chief Khaw Kok Chin said no foul play was suspected.

Khaw said the 40-year-old man was among several detained during raids in Kulim, Kedah, and Nibong Tebal between noon yesterday and this morning.

He said the deceased shared a cell with four others, who were also detained in the drug raid.

The man was found unconscious by policemen at 10am. The other cellmates were said to be asleep when he died, according to Khaw.

Earlier this morning, the five had appeared in court before a magistrate for the police to get a remand order.

“Based on CCTV footage, there was no foul play.

“The coroner came to check with other officers and we found no criminal elements.

“We are investigating this as a sudden death,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters here.

Khaw, who did not name the deceased, said the man from Lunas, Kedah, had a criminal record and had tested positive for drugs.

He also said the raid yielded 12.7kg of drugs and “mushrooms” with an estimated value of RM116,000. The drugs were found in a Perodua Alza in Nibong Tebal and on the other four male suspects, aged 35 to 48.

Khaw said several vehicles and RM1,020 in cash belonging to the five detainees were also seized.
