BATU PAHAT:
The family of a 24-year-old man still missing in the Jeram Air Putih water surge tragedy in Terengganu is hoping for a miracle for his safe return.

Shahrizal, 40, brother of Fikri Saliman, 24, said the incident felt like a nightmare. “As his next of kin, we just want to know what happened to him,” he told reporters at his home in Kampung Parit Kuda, Semerah.

He said the family only learned of the incident involving Fikri and the family of his fiancee, Putri Balqis Izzati Abdul Rahman, 18, through a cousin of theirs at about noon yesterday.

The water surge tragedy on Saturday involved 10 victims: Putri Balqis, her father, mother, four sisters aged between 4 and 16, and two brothers aged 6 and 11, and Fikri. Six bodies have been found so far, with four others still missing, police said.

Shahrizal said his brother had just recovered from a fever and had gone to the waterfall by motorcycle. “He told us he would be back on Saturday or Sunday as he was working on Monday,” he said.

Shahrizal said he would be leaving for Terengganu tonight with a few congregants from the Kampung Parit Kuda mosque to help search for his missing brother.

Two drown in Kulim

Two men drowned today at separate recreation spots in Kulim, Kedah, police said.

Kulim police chief Redzuan Salleh said the first incident involved an 18-year-old man who had been swimming with his friends in the river at the Lata Arus Deras Lubuk Buluh Recreation Centre near Sedim.

“The victim and his friends had gone to an area with strong currents. He was trying to save one of his friends, who had lost his footing in the river when the strong currents swept him away.

“Members of the public managed to find his body in the riverbed and brought it ashore,” he said in a statement today.

The second incident occurred at the Air Puteh Recreation Centre near Junjong where a 24-year-old man was found drowned after going swimming with his friends.
