PETALING JAYA:
Umno’s former Kemaman MP Ahmad Shabery Cheek has been appointed as the new Felda chairman.

His appointment will take effect on July 1, Bernama reported.

Shabery had served in various portfolios between 2008 and 2018 as the information minister, youth and sports minister, communications and multimedia minister, as well as the agriculture and agro-based industry minister.

Last week, he said he would not be contesting in the upcoming elections in six states.

Shabery will replace former Terengganu menteri besar Idris Jusoh, who stepped down as Felda chairman last week, one year ahead of schedule.

Idris had said he accepted the decision by the Prime Minister’s Office to relinquish the position.

Idris, who served as the higher education minister from 2015 to 2018, was appointed as Felda chairman in May 2020. He replaced Bakke Salleh.

In February 2022, then prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that Idris’ contract as Felda chairman had been extended by two more years.

Idris was the Besut MP for three terms but chose not to defend his seat in last year’s general election.
