Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow obtained the consent of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak to dissolve the assembly during an audience at Seri Mutiara this morning.
“This morning, I obtained the consent of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri to sign the proclamation of the dissolution of the Penang state assembly to pave the way for the state polls.
“I am relieved that this is over, so we can now look forward to preparing for the state election with the date to be determined by the Election Commission,” Bernama quoted him as saying.
Penang has 40 state seats. In the 2018 general election, Pakatan Harapan won 37 seats, with Bersatu as part of the coalition then. Barisan Nasional won two seats and PAS one.
The four seats won by Bersatu in 2018 had to be vacated after Penang introduced anti-party hopping legislation earlier this year.
Penang will be holding a state election within 60 days along with Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
