Crewman dies, 2 passengers hurt as boats collide near Pulau Perhentian

Police say the fishing boat involved in the collision with a tourist boat sank later.

PETALING JAYA:
A crewman died while two passengers were badly injured when two boats collided in waters near Pulau Perhentian, near Jertih, today.

Bernama reported the incident happened at 8.15am and said the man killed was identified as Rahmat Mat Ariffin, 43, from Kampung Nail, Kuala Besut.

Besut acting district police chief Azrol Anuar Nor said the incident involved a fishing boat carrying three crewmen and 10 passengers and a tourist boat with two crewmen and 10 passengers.

He said the tourist boat was proceeding from Pasir Panjang, on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, to the jetty of a resort on the island at the time.

A leak occurred in the fishing boat after the collision and it sank later. A crew member was injured badly and died later.

Azrol said the tourist boat was slightly damaged. The passengers, including three foreigners and two children, were not injured.

The injured were taken to the health clinic on the island on another boat. They were later transferred to Hospital Besut.
