PAS treasurer Iskandar Abdul Samad said Puad should instead “look in the mirror” and reflect on Umno’s own shortcomings.
He said Puad appeared to have forgotten that Umno formed the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with PAS one year after Barisan Nasional (BN) suffered a “severe defeat” in the 14th general election (GE14) in May 2018 and was ousted from power.
“PAS adopted a desperate and traumatised Umno,” Iskandar said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Puad said PAS’ history showed that it often depended on the success of other parties for its own interests. He claimed that PAS was willing to sacrifice key principles of its struggle for the sake of sharing power in government.
Iskandar said PAS prioritised the “unity of the ummah” rather than positions in government. He said this was evident in the Islamic party’s invitation to Umno to establish MN.
He added that Umno was the one riding on the coattails of other parties, through its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the unity government.
“Umno only has 26 parliamentary seats while PH has 82,” he said.
