GEORGE TOWN: Residents in Penang have been advised to store water after Sungai Muda in Kedah, which supplies water to 80% of Penang, experienced an “extreme drop” in water levels.
The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) said water levels were recorded below 1m at about 5am this morning at the Lahar Tiang intake.
It said it was not aware of the actual cause of the drop but suspects a “mishap” occurred upstream. As a result, water supply in Penang would be affected.
“In response, PBAPP is drawing down water from the Mengkuang Dam for use at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant,” it said in a statement.
PBAPP added that it was liaising with the irrigation and drainage department (DID) to resolve the issue.
