PETALING JAYA:
Dr Mahathir Mohamad has decided to quit Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), the coalition comprising Malay-based parties, NGOs, academics and professionals, citing its failure to win the support of voters.

According to Astro Awani, the former prime minister said he was no longer the chairman of GTA.

Mahathir said the decision was made after GTA failed to obtain voters’ support, especially during the last general election.

“My chairmanship of GTA is a thing of the past. I now no longer hold any position in the coalition. It (GTA) didn’t work out, and it didn’t help us win the general election,” he was quoted as saying.

He had announced the formation of GTA in August last year.

GTA contested in 125 seats at the general election in November. However, all its candidates, including Mahathir and his son Mukhriz, who is the Pejuang president, were defeated and also lost their deposits.

The coalition includes Berjasa, Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) and the National Indian Muslim Alliance Party (Iman). Pejuang, the party Mahathir founded in 2020, left in January, saying it wanted to focus on strengthening the party,

Mahathir also pointed out that GTA could not be registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS). The coalition had submitted its application in September last year.

The former Langkawi MP said he will move forward with the “Malay Proclamation” without getting involved with any other political party.

Kedah Pejuang’s leadership council is the latest to sign the proclamation.

Earlier this month, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and several leaders of the party also signed the document to signify their support for Mahathir’s call for the Malays to unite and “save” the community.

Bersatu’s deputy president, Ahmad Faizal Azumu, information chief Razali Idris and Supreme Council member Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid had also signed the document in their personal capacities.

In March, Mahathir officially joined Putra, a party led by long-time ally Ibrahim Ali, as its adviser. It came just weeks after Mahathir and 12 other party leaders quit Pejuang following its decision to withdraw from GTA.
