PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan cited how Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously said that the government’s debt and liabilities currently stood at RM1.5 trillion, or about 82% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
“Excessive Aidilfitri celebrations run contrary to Putrajaya’s policy statements and commitment to being more prudent so as to strengthen its financial position, which is allegedly burdened by debt, mismanagement and wastage.
“Such words will only have meaning and effect if they are followed by coherent action,” Takiyuddin said in a statement today.
On Sunday, Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor said federal leaders should stick to the long-standing tradition of hosting a single open house event at the prime minister’s residence, Seri Perdana, or around Putrajaya.
Last week, the Prime Minister’s Department said Seri Perdana will not host an open house event this year. Instead, the department will hold its functions in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
The department also said Anwar will attend three other Aidilfitri open houses in Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, organised by the state governments.
Takiyuddin said the celebrations in all six states where elections are set to be held later this year raise questions about the government’s true motives and purposes.
He said such a move was improper as it would politicise a day of celebration.
That would mean even an auspicious day such as Hari Raya would be prone to abuse for improper political motives such as to secure influence ahead of the elections.
Takiyuddin also said the government must assure the public that it will not misuse its agencies and machinery in the organisation of these events.
The state assemblies of the six states are due to be dissolved or will expire in June, and elections are expected to be held in July.
