PAS-held states to dissolve assemblies in June

Party vice-president Amar Nik Abdullah said three other states controlled by Pakatan Harapan would do the same, leading to elections in July.

Elections to six state assemblies are likely in July, according to PAS vice-president Amar Nik Abdullah, who is Kelantan’s deputy menteri besar.
PETALING JAYA:
The state assemblies of PAS-controlled Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu are expected to be dissolved in June to make way for elections, according to the party’s vice-president Amar Nik Abdullah.

He said elections were likely to be held in six states in July.

“Kelantan has already decided to dissolve the state assembly at the end of June. I was told the date for the dissolution of five other state assemblies will take place in stages, but all will be in June,” he told the New Straits Times after an open house in Kelantan.

He said he had been told that the leaders of Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, which are controlled by Pakatan Harapan, had also agreed to dissolve their state assemblies in June.

Under the constitution, elections must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of a state assembly.

On the subject of candidates, he said a list of names has already been submitted but final selections are ultimately at the discretion of state PAS leader Ahmad Yakob. In areas won by Barisan Nasional candidates, Amar said Bersatu members would be put forward.

In February, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the leaders of the six states had reached a consensus to consider dissolving their respective assemblies at the end of June.
