MACC seizes two Bersatu accounts

The anti-graft agency says the seizure orders follow the court charges against Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

MACC says the seizures of two of Bersatu’s bank accounts were enforced on April 11.
PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized two bank accounts belonging to Bersatu.

MACC said the seizure orders were served on the relevant banks under Section 50 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).

“The seizures were enforced on April 11 following investigations and charges against Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin under the MACC Act and Amla.

“Prior to this, the accounts were frozen on Jan 12 and 13 under Section 44 of Amla,” the anti-graft agency said in a statement.

In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that several bank accounts held by Bersatu had been frozen as part of the agency’s investigation into the party.

The probe was linked to the alleged misappropriation of funds for Covid-19 stimulus packages amounting to RM92.5 billion by the former Perikatan Nasional-led government.

Bersatu later filed an application in the High Court to challenge the MACC over the freezing of its accounts, accusing the agency of abusing its powers to conduct “selective prosecution” against PN.

Since then, Muhyiddin has been charged in court with four counts of abuse of power in relation to the Jana Wibawa programme to allegedly obtain RM232.5 million for his political party, Bersatu.

Bersatu’s Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad were also charged with accepting bribes in relation to Jana Wibawa.

The Jana Wibawa programme was introduced in November 2020 by the Muhyiddin-led government as a Covid-19 stimulus initiative to help Bumiputera contractors.

It became mired in controversy after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the costs were too high for some projects that had been approved without going through a tender process.
