PETALING JAYA:
Details of all recipients of funds from the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) will now be displayed on its official website.

Bernama reported that these details would be found at www.mitra.gov.my

This long-awaited move is part of efforts to clean up Mitra’s reputation and restore people’s confidence in it, said newly appointed Mitra special committee chairman R Ramanan.

The move was approved during its first meeting today.

Ramanan, who is the Sungai Buloh MP, said people complained previously that they did not know what was happening within Mitra.

“Moving forward, every fund recipient, even if it is RM1, RM10 or even one sen, will have his or her name displayed on Mitra’s website,” he said.

Ramanan said the special committee will ensure that the RM100 million allocation for Mitra under the 2023 budget is channelled transparently in helping and empowering the Indian and Indian Muslim communities facing hardship.

He said all members of the task force were appointed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

They comprise C Sivarraajh, Klang MP V Ganabatirau, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran and Mitra director-general Raveendran Nair.

Ramanan said Mitra would send a letter to the national audit department to conduct an audit on the unit.

The committee will also invite officials from the integrity department and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to be involved in its meetings to rebuild public confidence, he said.

He said his focus was to restore Mitra’s tarnished image and implement restructuring.

In 2021, MACC investigated Mitra over allegations of misappropriation of funds from 2019 to 2021.

It was reported that loopholes allowed millions of ringgit to be misappropriated by the recipients, who did not submit reports detailing their expenditure for verification.

Ramanan encouraged NGOs to submit their grant applications as the closing date had been extended from April 29 to May 28. So far, 448 applications have been received.
