KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) expects an increase in traffic volume of up to 2.3 million vehicles daily on the three major expressways, starting today until May 7 in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration.

In a statement, LLM said it expects increased traffic on the North-South Expressway (PLUS), Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway 1.

It said it has instructed highway concessionaires to take steps to minimise the impact of the increased traffic and reduce congestion on the expressways.

This includes stopping construction and maintenance work involving the closure of highway lanes effective yesterday until May 7, and issuing travel time advisories (TTA) to help motorists plan their journey.

The other measures include displaying traffic information and reminders on electronic signs for motorists to top up their Touch n’ Go cards or e-wallets before starting their journey.

The highway concessionaires are also requested to station their staff at toll plazas to assist motorists in ensuring smooth traffic flow, especially when the free toll initiative is in effect, in addition to ensuring the system and operation at the toll plazas run smoothly.

They are also requested to open additional toll lanes in high-traffic areas.

LLM said it will also ensure that the concessionaires provide enough emergency response team (ERT) members to deal with any incidents, as well as provide additional facilities in parking lots and portable toilets in several R&R areas along PLUS and the East Coast Expressway 2.

It said that although there will be no toll charges from today until Friday, and on April 24, motorists still need to use their Touch n’ Go or SmartTAG cards at toll plazas, while those using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags need to enter and exit highways at the RFID lanes.

LLM said its traffic management centre will operate for 24 hours from April 19 to 26 to provide the latest traffic information to highway users.
