JITRA:
A total of 9,000 tonnes of solid waste was collected in the first week of Ramadan this year compared to 8,800 tonnes in the same period last year in Kedah, said a waste management company in the state.

Speaking to reporters, E-Idaman Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Zaki Abdul Aziz Daud said the 3% increase was due to the daily waste generated from residential premises, businesses and Ramadan bazaars.

“I hope the public would be more prudent in preparing food for breaking of fast and during the Aidilfitri celebration to reduce food waste which accounts for 40% of garbage in landfills.

“E-Idaman will carry out more bulk and garden waste collection in housing estates that have been identified as major generators during this period.

“Waste collection and cleaning services will also operate as usual and will even be extended on the night of the festival,” he said at the Kita E-Idaman Ramadan event in collaboration with the Kubang Pasu zakat office, Yayasan Jariah Aafiyat and Kedah Elite Media Club (KMEK) here.

The event also saw six families in the Kubang Pasu district receiving cash and food items as well as Raya cakes.
