PETALING JAYA:
Police are probing a Chinese national’s claim that she was a victim of extortion by a policeman after she failed to carry her passport with her while travelling in Malaysia.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Yahaya Othman said police had detected a viral TikTok video yesterday where the woman made the claim. The video depicted a policeman in uniform conducting checks.

Yahaya said the policeman and another individual involved have been identified and will be summoned to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to give their statements.

Investigations are being carried out under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.

Section 233 of the CMA criminalises online content that is “obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.
