Wan Fayhsal files emergency motion to discuss Anwar’s Saudi trip

The Bersatu Youth chief also wants a detailed breakdown of the trip's cost, stating that this was important as it involved taxpayers’ money.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the visit did not have any major impact as the prime minister did not meet with Saudi monarch King Salman Abdul Aziz Al-Saud or Crown Prince Mohammed Salman Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.
PETALING JAYA:
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) has filed an emergency motion for today’s Parliament sitting to be postponed to discuss Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia.

The head of the opposition’s international affairs committee, Wan Fayhsal said the motion seeks to discuss the economic impact and bilateral ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia resulting from Anwar’s official visit to the country from March 22 to 24.

The Bersatu Youth chief also wanted a detailed breakdown of the trip’s cost, stating that this was important as it involved taxpayers’ money.

“Under Standing Orders 18(1) and 18(2), I suggest the sitting today be postponed to discuss certain matters of public interest,” he said.

“The visit did not have any major impact as the prime minister did not meet with Saudi monarch King Salman Abdul Aziz Al-Saud or Crown Prince Mohammed Salman Abdul Aziz Al-Saud as planned.”

Wan Fayhsal also claimed the snub could risk Malaysia’s haj quota and palm oil sales.

At a press conference outside Parliament, Wan Fayhsal said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul accepted the motion at 9.50am this morning.

Wan Fayhsal said he has also submitted questions on this issue for the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) tomorrow.

Yesterday, Anwar’s aide brushed off attempts to paint the visit as a failure and a waste of public funds.

Ahmad Farhan Fauzi said Anwar’s three-day visit was “fruitful” and had strengthened bilateral ties between both nations.

Farhan also said that Anwar had a very tight schedule which meant he was unable to meet with other leaders of the Saudi Arabian government.

The prime minister, however, held a meeting with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the World Muslim League in Mecca in addition to witnessing the signing of several important memoranda of understanding involving businesses and industries.
