I may hold trial in hospital or at Siti Nuramira’s home, warns judge

Siti Nuramira Abdullah is absent for her hearing again, with her lawyer saying she is hospitalised.

Siti Nuramira Abdullah, who is facing a criminal charge for offending Muslims, is said to be suffering from an intestinal infection.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A sessions court judge warned that she may hold Siti Nuramira Abdullah’s criminal trial in the hospital or at the accused’s home if she continues to absent herself from future court hearings.

Judge Nor Hasniah Ab Razak made the remark after lawyer R Sivaraj told the court that Nuramira had been admitted to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Nuramira is standing trial for allegedly causing disharmony among the Muslim community during her performance last year at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Sivaraj tendered a receipt issued by the hospital which he claimed was proof of her hospitalisation.

Hasniah, however, disputed the lawyer’s statement, saying there was nothing on the receipt which showed the accused’s admission to hospital.

“If she is on medical leave again on April 17, I want her medical report (to be tendered in court). This is the second time (she has absented herself),” the judge added.

Yesterday Nuramira’s lawyers told the court that she had been admitted to hospital for an intestinal infection.

The hearing is scheduled to continue on April 17, May 26 and May 31.

Nuramira is charged under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which provides that whoever causes disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will on grounds of religion, between persons or groups of persons professing the same or different religions, commits an offence.

The offence is punishable with imprisonment of between two and five years.
