Hundreds of political leaders and supporters gathered outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya in a show of support for Muhyiddin, who was called in for questioning over the Jana Wibawa programme, launched during his time as prime minister.
Police today said they were investigating the gathering, with those involved set to be called in for questioning.
Wan Fayhsal said police have the right to investigate the event but insisted that it was not organised by any one party.
“Those who gathered were just members of the public who sincerely support Muhyiddin,” he said at the party’s annual general assembly here.
“I don’t know why they (the police) would make this a problem when we were just there to show our support. Is this a crime now?
“We weren’t rallying. We were just waiting for Muhyiddin to arrive, and we dispersed after that. So what’s the issue?
“If the police are trying to make it an issue, then we must clarify this with the authorities. It was never meant to be a rally and there was no (one) particular organiser.
“We were told Muhyiddin would be questioned and arrested after that. Hence all of us, including opposition MPs, came to show our support.”
Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Azmi Abu Kassim said those who attended the solidarity gathering for Muhyiddin on Thursday would be called in for questioning.
In a Bernama report, Azmi said police had opened an investigation paper on the case and it will be referred to the public prosecutor for further action.
Muhyiddin was arrested on Thursday before being released on MACC bail.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin was charged with four counts of abuse of power in relation to the Jana Wibawa programme to obtain RM232.5 million for Bersatu. He was also charged with two counts of money laundering amounting to RM195 million. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Among those who gathered outside the MACC headquarters in a show of support for Muhyiddin were Bersatu’s deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, Supreme Council member Azmin Ali and information chief Razali Idris.
Also present were PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Gerakan president Dominic Lau.
