PETALING JAYA:
An environmental group claims that the Perak works department is planning to build a two-lane single carriageway road about 9km long that will cut through a permanent forest reserve in the state.

Rimba Disclosure Project said an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report on the proposed road from Kampung Raja Intan Suraya to Kampung Beng had been submitted recently.

In a Twitter post attaching links to the EIA and a public feedback form, it said the proposed project will pass through the Piah forest reserve and impact about 73.5ha of forest.

The group said it deduced that 73.5ha of forest area would be impacted considering how the road would be 9.8km long and between 50m and 100m wide, according to the EIA report.

“We assumed an average width of 75m and multiplied it by the length to derive at this number,” it said.

The EIA report shared by the group stated that the proposed project will involve forest area and agricultural land, adding that it would “traverse the Piah permanent forest reserve”.

The report also stated that the project was a continuation of the 4.15km Kampung Beng-Kampung Batu Reng road, which was being built.

FMT has reached out to Perak science, environment and green technology committee chairman Teh Kok Lim and natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad for comment.
