Aizat Fikri Nasir said he was informed of RoS’ next course of action after meeting them yesterday.
“I was summoned (by RoS) to provide more details about the report I lodged. RoS has taken note of the issue and is reviewing Article 8(1) of Umno’s constitution,” he said in a statement today.
Article 8(1) states that the Umno general assembly is the party’s highest authority, and the party’s course would be determined based on its powers and orders, subject to the constitution and rules.
Aizat also said RoS had assured him it would expedite its investigation and carry out a fair investigation as Umno was currently conducting its elections in stages until March 18.
“I hope the president and deputy president can be patient and not issue misleading statements. Let RoS conduct its investigations fairly and independently,” he said.
Last week, RoS gave Umno 60 days to give a detailed explanation of the motion, approved at the party’s recent general assembly.
Aizat and Negeri Sembilan Umno member Fiqri Firdaus lodged the report with RoS last month seeking an investigation into the possible breach of the party’s constitution.
They claimed the tabling of the no-contest motion had breached Article 10 of the party’s constitution. They also insisted that the motion had to be tabled two weeks before the general assembly, or seven days if tabled by the Supreme Council.
On Jan 27, RoS director-general Nawardi Saad said they would meet Umno representatives in the first week of February on the matter.
Earlier today, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he was confident the party will be able to satisfactorily explain to RoS the no-contest motion for its top two posts.
He said the party had 60 days to get back to RoS on the matter.
“I’m confident we will get a positive response,” he told reporters at Parliament.
Zahid also brushed off allegations of a possible breach in the party’s constitution, saying the party had explained the various provisions in the constitution to RoS.
With the general assembly being Umno’s highest authority, the no-contest motion was not an issue, he said.
