GEORGE TOWN:
The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has ordered the state’s largest mall to seal off an area where a ceiling collapsed last night, bringing down a deluge of water that had collected above it.

The incident at Queensbay Mall was caught on video by a member of the public who was filming the flooded walkway on the third floor of the mall.

The video captured a 10 metre section of the ceiling boards crashing down.

No one was hurt in the 11.10pm incident as most of the shops were closed.

“We have instructed the building owner to get a consultant to inspect the area to determine the cause of the ceiling’s collapse,” an MBPP spokesman told FMT.

MBPP said a nuisance notice had been issued to the mall owners instructing them to seal off the affected area.

In a statement, Queensbay Mall said heavy rain had led to water overflowing into parts of the mall, affecting several stores in the south zone of the mall’s third floor.

The affected areas have been cleaned up and all the tenants are open as usual today, said the mall. However, the affected section where the ceiling collapsed has been cordoned off.

Meanwhile, a state official revealed that the greater Bayan Lepas area, where the mall is located, recorded nearly 70mm of rainfall per hour last night. The area receives around 200mm of rainfall each month.
