Court dismisses Hadi’s objection against election petition by BN candidate

The Terengganu election court has dismissed a preliminary objection by Marang MP Abdul Hadi Awang to a Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate’s petition to challenge his victory in the last general election (GE15) with claims of vote buying.

The PAS president’s lawyer, Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, said that election judge Hassan Abdul Ghani ordered the petition by Jasmira Othman to go for a full trial, Sinar Harian reported.

Among the objections raised by Hadi’s lawyers was that Jasmira’s petition was filed out of time.

The court has set March 6 to 21 for a full hearing. Jasmira was represented by lawyers Amin Othman and Hafarizam Harun.

Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said was previously reported to have said that the party had filed three election petitions to challenge Perikatan Nasional’s victories in Marang, Kuala Terengganu and Kemaman.

Umno alleged that there was vote-buying during the campaign period, and that most households in the constituencies received RM500 to RM1,000 each.

Hadi won the contest for the Marang seat in a four-cornered fight, with a majority of 41,729 votes.
