This, he said, was because Selangor voters are “dynamic” and do not choose candidates based on party or personality, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“The situation is fluid and can change at any time, especially by the middle of the year when the state election is expected to be held.
“No one can accurately predict what will happen tomorrow or the day after, and that will surely influence the voters’ mindset when the polling day arrives,” Megat was quoted as saying.
He pointed out that Umno lost badly in the 15th general election (GE15) despite winning big in two state elections and seven consecutive by-elections (including Semenyih) since the previous general election (GE14) took place.
“The situation is dynamic. It depends on the voters’ preference at the time of the polls. What will happen in the next three or four months, no one can predict,” he said.
However, the Umno Supreme Council member stressed that Malaysia is a democratic country and so Khairy is free to chart his own political narrative following his sacking from the party.
Khairy was sacked on Jan 27 for breaching party discipline during GE15.
On Jan 30, Khairy told Channel NewsAsia (CNA) that he was considering making a political comeback in the upcoming Selangor state election.
The former Umno Youth chief said he believes Selangor is the “political epicentre” of Malaysia and he plans to build a new political base in the state.
In the meantime, Khairy has accepted an offer to be a radio announcer on HotFM beginning Feb 15.
He will join HotFM’s “Bekpes Hot” team, alongside its three other announcers, Johan, AG and AC Mizal, and will be on the air from Monday to Friday, between 6am and 10am.
