PETALING JAYA:
Contractors in Sarawak will have to take a pledge to ensure they deliver projects in a timely manner and in compliance with quality requirements, failing which their contracts will be terminated.

In a report in The Borneo Post, Sarawak deputy premier Douglas Uggah Embas said the pledge introduced by Sarawak’s public works department (JKR) is aimed at monitoring the delivery of infrastructure projects in the state.

Uggah, who is the state’s infrastructure and port development minister, said there were currently 215 projects worth RM28 billion being implemented by JKR Sarawak, of which 34 had been categorised as “critically delayed” due to various implementation issues.

“These issues need to be highlighted and resolved at the earliest possible stage to avoid any adverse impact to the parties involved,” he said at an event in Kuching.

“The relevant regional agencies are trying their best to assist contractors complete the projects entrusted to them.

“We have to play a more active role in managing projects – (it’s) no more business as usual.”

He also advised contractors to present their proposals if there were changes or processes that needed to be reviewed.

Uggah said project delivery had always been one of the state government’s major concerns as it was a reflection of its image and reputation.

Uggah said it was crucial that all industry players, especially consultants and contractors, were equipped with the relevant technical knowledge and resources.

“We will no longer tolerate any errant contractors and consultants,” said Uggah.
