He said the probe will only create fear among elected representatives and their staff about speaking up.
“We have become a mature democracy where we can actually live without being fearful of the police,” he told FMT.
Noor Suhana Ishak, who is the aide to DAP’s Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, was summoned to the Sentul police station, while economic affairs minister Rafizi Ramli’s press secretary Farhan Iqbal was summoned to the Putrajaya police station.
Both are being investigated for criminal defamation and misuse of network facilities over tweets they posted about a provocation that took place at a ceramah by Muda in Muar last year.
Meanwhile, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he was shocked to find out that the two were being probed by the police.
“The cops are supposed to be investigating the culprits behind the provocation. Instead, they chose to investigate the tweets sent by Farhan and Suhana.
“The provocations happened repeatedly when I was campaigning, and guests who attended made police reports about the disturbance and vandalism during the fundraising dinner in Muar, but till today this is still under investigation,” he said in a statement.
In a post on Twitter, Suhana said she had “heard” that Umno Youth members had disrupted a ceramah featuring the Muda president. She had labelled the group as “gangsters”.
However, in a Twitter thread, she had emphasised that she had only heard that Umno Youth members were behind the disturbance.
The group of 30 had also allegedly revved their motorcycles and called Syed Saddiq, the Muar MP, a liar.
In videos of the incident posted on social media, police were seen blocking the group from approaching further.
