PETALING JAYA:
A tour bus on its way from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur went up in flames after stopping at the UPM toll plaza in Serdang early this morning.

Selangor fire and rescue department assistant operations director Hafisham Mohd Noor said they received an emergency call about the incident at 6.19am.

“The bus was destroyed. However, all 44 passengers and the bus driver managed to escape,” he said.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

He said the fire also damaged part of the toll booth’s roof.

Bernama reported Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof as saying that the incident happened shortly after the bus driver noticed a clutch failure.

“According to the 41-year-old driver, he tried to press the clutch pedal about 50m from the toll lane and it felt hard. The bus stopped by itself in the lane.

“At that time, a passenger shouted that there was a fire at the back of the bus. The driver then noticed the fire raging through the rearview mirror,” he said.
